Breed Rescue

Many families looking to adopt a pet like the idea of saving a dog that has had a tough life, so they gravitate to a shelter or rescue when looking for a pet. Rescues are usually the best option for a purebred pet since shelters seldom have a selection of dogs of a particular breed and almost never have time to teach manners, evaluate temperament, or treat minor illnesses and are not usually aware of the nuances of breed behavior...

Trails End Vizsla Club of Oregon receives numerous requests each year for assistance and placement of rescue vizslas. Our goal is to help save as many purebred dogs as absolutely possible from neglect, illness, abuse, injury and potentially premature death. Because of the tireless efforts of rescue volunteers, more and more dogs are being rehomed and saved from the unfortunate and sad endings of overcrowded shelters or homelessness.

TEVCO would like to help give all these deserving dogs a second chance to have the best life possible through referrals, adoption, rescue and/or behavior counseling. It is our hope to help place each and every one of these sensitive, intelligent, loveable and deserving dogs into new homes where their personalities, potential and distinct qualities will be better valued and enjoyed. These dogs just want to be loved. It is the least we can do to help find that for them.

Rescue groups have become a great alternative for surrendering purebred dogs and more importantly as a source for healthy, well-mannered, spayed or neutered pets for families. In some cases run by individuals, in others by local or national breed clubs or rescue networks, these groups have undoubtedly saved thousands of animals from death and provided thousands of families with beloved pets. Using modern technology such as internet and email, many of these rescue organizations have networked together in order to match potential adopters with dogs from all over the United States and abroad. .

The dogs available for adoption have come from many different circumstances. Some were purchased by families on a whim, families that did not understand the needs of the vizsla breed. Others lost their homes when an owner became too old or sick to provide the necessary care or when a family's lifestyle changed because of job loss or divorce, and still others were picked up as strays or dumped by owners who wanted freedom from the responsibility of dog care. Some go directly from a home into rescue; others come by way of shelters.

Once the decision is made to obtain an adult dog from a rescue group, choosing the right rescue dog should be done with as much care as if the purchase was to be a puppy from a breeder. Be sure to learn everything you can about the rescue dog and be sure to speak directly to the evaluator or the foster so that you will be aware of any issues that may effect your adoption decision. And remember, the rescue groups have invested time, money, and emotion into these dogs and want only the best match for the dog and the “forever” home. After you bring the dog home, they should be your primary lifeline for help if the adoption is not working out as planned.
